Brumbies saddle up with the Knights for new season

THE Burpengary Brumbies Cricket Club will shine under a new flag this cricket season, following a merger with the Lakes Knights Cricket Club in July of this year.

This comes as the Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association 2025/26 competition kicked off on October 11, with children throughout the region keen to start the new season.

The Lakes Knights are playing under new colours and a new emblem this season, to celebrate the history and merger of both clubs, with the club being committed to supporting the future of cricket in the region.

The Lakes Knights President, Daniel Moyle, said the Burpengary Brumbies were a “historic” club but were lacking volunteers to support the club’s operations.

“They had the field space, they had a couple of teams, they had a seniors team, but something we offer is we’ve got really good, strong support from our families,” he said.

“We’ve got a strong committee and offer those background planning and organisational aspects, so they approached us and asked to merge as they were struggling in that area.”

Queensland Cricket, Moreton Bay Council, the club and Brisbane North Cricket Association came together and decided, instead of seeing Burpengary fold over, they would merge the clubs.

“That way we can keep the history of Burpengary Cricket Club and we don’t lose it because we’re merging the clubs, as opposed to letting them go under,” Mr Moyle said.

“It’s a win-win for both clubs. The Lakes picks up two beautiful grounds, turf wickets, so those facilities will go really good to supporting the Lakes and the kids in the region, providing cricket.

“We made sure to preserve the Burpengary history, like the Constitution, the life members all came across... all that history can stay, because there’s a fair bit of history in the Burpengary region.

“We wanted to keep that alive at the same time, keep the club going and strengthen the club from a junior perspective, and that will, in turn, support the seniors.”

Mr Moyle said they are very proud to be able to offer more avenues for kids to play cricket, with their club being the strongest junior club in the area.

“It’s all about giving opportunities to children in this area and making sure that if they want to play cricket, we provide that opportunity to them,” he said.

Mr Moyle added the club is also one of the fastest growing since COVID, having already had over 400 registrations for the season and boasting a record high 21 junior teams and a senior team.

“We’re very fortunate that schools in the region support us with grounds,” he said.

“Because we’re advancing so quickly, we also get a lot of support from the Moreton Bay Council.”

Mr Moyle said the club is unique for the region in that it offers all levels of cricket and caters for everyone throughout the year, including the Warehouse Competition in winter and offering mixed and girls-only teams to encourage female participation.

The Lakes Knights B1 team are currently sitting at the top of the ladder in the Queensland Sub Districts Cricket Association B1 Summer 25/26 competition, playing their next game on October 18 at 12:30pm at the Burpengary Sports Activities James Worthington Oval.
