Caboolture women kick their way into history

This comes just a month after the Caboolture FC Women took home the Kappa Pro Series title, overcoming Olympic FC in a deja vu game that also ended in a tense penalty shootout at Imperial Corp Stadium on August 16.

Caboolture FC General Manager Reece Dalton said he was incredibly proud of the club, the coaches and the players for their achievement.

“This was our debut season in FQPL1—the first time we’ve ever competed at this level in club history,” he said.

“To finish just one point off promotion, and to win two trophies is a fantastic achievement.”

Buoyed by a commanding 3-0 semi-final win over Capalaba last week, Caboolture started the Grand Final on the front foot.

Early attacking intent saw Cally Togiai and Stephanie Latham combine for a dangerous shot just four minutes in, testing Olympic goalkeeper Tierney Sunderland. Togiai’s relentless runs continued to trouble the opposition, while Caboolture’s defence held firm against Olympic’s advances, highlighted by a crucial save from Monica Vancea in the first half.

The second half saw Caboolture’s pressure pay off. On 63 minutes, after intercepting a throw-in high up the pitch, Latham turned past her marker and fired a stunning shot into the top corner to give Caboolture the lead.

Olympic responded with an equalizer in the 79th minute, but Caboolture’s resilience shone through as they weathered late pressure and injuries to key players.

With the scores level after extra time, the match was decided by penalties. Stephanie Latham, Stef Mayhew, Cally Togiai, and Jaden Jeter all converted for Caboolture, while goalkeeper Monica Vancea made two crucial saves to secure a 4-2 shootout win and the championship title.

Mr Dalton emphasised the significance of the victory for the club’s profile and its influence in the soccer world.

“It was a chance to put ourselves on the map for football in Queensland,” he said.

“Not a lot of people gave us much of a chance at the start of the year, so I’m just so proud of the coaching staff and the girls. It’s been a very, very successful season for them.

“Winning a Grand Final in our first season in the division is special, and to win the Kappa Pro as well is something we hope will act as a springboard for us to go and win promotion next year.

“Our aim is to establish ourselves in the National Premier Leagues (NPL) within the next 12 months.”

The win not only added another piece of silverware to Caboolture’s trophy cabinet, but also signalled the club’s growing reputation in Queensland football.
