Moreton Bay is facing an escalating shortage of foster carers, with Life Without Barriers warning the region is struggling to meet the growing number of children who need a safe and stable home.

The urgent call comes as Queensland records around 10,000 children currently in out-of-home care — part of a national total of 45,000.

Local services say the gap between the number of children needing support and the number of available carers is widening.

Life Without Barriers spokesperson Steven Mead said the shortage is being felt sharply in Moreton Bay.

“We always need more carers, particularly here in the Moreton Bay region,” Mr Mead said.

“It is so important that we find more foster carers who can provide a safe, stable, and loving home for these children.”

Mr Mead said the pressure has intensified during the organisation’s Sharing is Caring campaign, which highlights the need for more people to put their hand up.

“The love and support of a foster carer can help change the trajectory of a child’s life and have a big impact on their health and wellbeing,” he said.

Carer shortages mean many children risk being placed far from their families, schools and communities.

“The more foster carers we can recruit, the more likely children will be able to stay close and connected to their family, community, and kin,” Mr Mead said.

The organisation is urging residents to consider all forms of care, from respite to long-term support.

“We know that people living in this region have big hearts,” Mr Mead said.

“If anyone feels like they have the capacity to support a child who needs some love, care and stability… we would love to hear from them.” Residents can learn more at lwb.org.au
