Mount Mee Road voted one of Queensland’s worst roads
Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, is very concerned but not surprised that Mount Mee Road has been voted as Queensland’s fourth worst road, according to the latest RACQ Unroadworthy Roads Survey.
More than 1,500 nominations were received in response to the survey while 556 different roads were named, after respondents were asked to pinpoint problem stretches of road around Queensland.
With RACQ issuing the survey every two years, the latest figures had the Bruce Highway at the top of the list with 267 responses, followed by Kin Kin Road with 44, Old Maroochydore Road with 37, and Mount Mee Road with 29.
“It’s scary, but not surprising, to see that the RACQ have confirmed what Mount Mee and Ocean View locals have been telling me for years: Mount Mee Road is unroadworthy,” Mr Powell said.
“It’s in a terrible state of disrepair for such a beautiful tourist route.
“It’s not just the locals who complain to me about it, but also the many visitors to the region travelling to vineyards, weddings, accommodation and more.”
Mr Powell said he had previously petitioned the Main Roads Minister to fix the uneven surfaces and narrow stretches of the road by commencing planning work and allocating annual funding, but that the request was denied.
“The worst stretch of Mount Mee Road is between Ocean View and Dayboro,” he said.
“There is a real need for upgrades here. There are so many accidents.
“And the community is growing. The road is no longer sufficient for the daily traffic it receives.”
Comments that RACQ received about the road included:
• Refilled potholes don’t last longer than a week;
• Shoulder damage is known to wreck tyres;
• It isn’t fit for the amount of cyclist and motorbike traffic it’s receiving;
• Corrugated bitumen affects steering and traction;
• Too many blind spots; and
• Lack of overtaking spots.
“It’s so disappointing that petitions to the Main Roads Minister to fix the road have fallen on deaf ears,” Mr Powell said.
“What will it take to get him to listen?
“Hopefully we don’t have to wait for Mount Mee Road to top the list of unroadworthy roads for action to be taken.
“And I certainly don’t want it to take a death to see improvements made.”
RACQ Traffic and Safety Engineering Manager, Greg Miszkowycz, said a report was put together based on the figures and was sent to the roads authorities to help prioritise funding.
With limited funds available, Mr Miszkowycz said it was up to the road authorities to prioritise where to invest, as not every nominated road could be prioritised.
