Showcasing the future of Moreton marine life
THE future of Moreton Bay’s marine environment will take centre stage next week when leading scientists, environmental advocates and community members come together for the Moreton Bay Sea Country Showcase.

The half-day event, hosted in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Rotary Redcliffe Sunrise Environmental Sustainability Action Group (ESRAG), and The Moreton Bay Foundation, will be held on Friday, November 7, from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the UniSC Moreton Bay Campus in Petrie.
UniSC, recently ranked 20th in the world by Times Higher Education for its impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, will lead the discussion through its School of Science, Technology and Engineering Research Clusters.
The showcase will feature ten eminent UniSC academics, including Professors Aman Oo, David Schoeman, Nick Paul, and Associate Professors Kylie Scales, Javier Leon, Ben Gilby, Andrew Olds, Kathy Townsend, Dominique Potvin, and Dr Bonnie Holmes.
Speakers will explore the theme of global impacts with local influence, focusing on sediment in the bay, shorebird conservation, and the restoration of shellfish reefs. Other key topics include climate change adaptation, marine biodiversity protection, and community-led restoration efforts.
A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Blueprint for a Sustainable Moreton Bay 2025–2035, developed by the Moreton Bay Foundation — a comprehensive plan identifying priority actions for protecting and renewing the bay over the next decade.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions, network with experts, and tour UniSC’s state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities, opened just last year. Morning tea will be provided.
The event sets out to strengthen collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and the community ahead of Brisbane 2032, ensuring that Moreton Bay remains a thriving and sustainable marine ecosystem for generations to come.
